A complex service needed a clearer direction

Keva provides pension services for Finland’s public-sector employees. The service turns complex pension information into practical guidance for people at different stages of their working life.

Keva wanted to improve the usability and visual consistency of its pension information service. The challenge was to modernise the experience without losing the depth and reliability required by the domain.

The concept focused on end-user needs, especially the expectations of people approaching retirement. Accessibility, clarity and confidence were central to the experience.

From specialist knowledge to a shared process

As one of two designers, I helped plan the design work, shape the visual concept, design and facilitate workshops, collaborate with the client and turn our shared findings into a coherent service concept.

The specialists understood the pension domain, legislation and the questions customers repeatedly faced. Workshops made that knowledge visible, helped the team prioritise it and transformed it into user stories for the concept.

  • Discover — Frame the opportunity and gather existing knowledge.
  • Understand — Interview specialists and map user needs.
  • Visualise — Turn insights into flows, wireframes and concepts.
  • Build — Create a testable high-fidelity prototype.
  • Learn — Validate the concept and refine the next iteration.

Turning workshop insights into testable interfaces

Users need the same general information presented clearly, at the right moment and in a form they can trust.

  • A worker transitioning to retirement: Needs a calm flow and clear guidance.
  • A retired service user: Wants to understand choices and their impact.
  • A person undergoing rehabilitation for work disability: Values speed, overview and direct access.

From rough wireframes to a validated visual concept

A three-week design sprint turned workshop material into a testable concept. I began with low-fidelity wireframes, aligned the direction with the client and then refined the approved flows into a consistent visual interface.

The concept was reviewed with the team throughout the process. This kept decisions visible and ensured that the final prototype reflected both user needs and the realities of the service.

From wireframes to a more expressive interface

The client responded positively to the concepts, and the next step was to move the selected direction into further testing and implementation.

  • Consistent borders and field states
  • Clearer interaction and content hierarchy
  • More detailed component guidance
  • A shared visual language across the service
